Edgware Road Escorts

The Edgware Road, which neatly divides Marylebone and Bayswater, is perhaps best known for being the Arabic capital of London. It has a rich ethnic diversity and a huge Middle Eastern influences. There are dozens of Arab restaurants and shops which line the straight from Marble Arch to the Marylebone Flyover. They are thronged with customers, especially at night and during the summer, when thousands of Arabs come on holiday to London.

History

Edgware Road is a Roman road extending into Watling Street. The road itself is one of the oldest thoroughfares in Britain, and stretches back to Roman times.  And even before the Roman times it was an ancient track winding its way through the Great Middlesex forest.

Nearby used to stand the Tyburn Tree which until the 18th Century stood as the site of public executions. The notorious Tyburn Tree was not a tree, but a set of gallows built in the 16th Century. They were erected at the southern end of the Edgware road, close to where Marble Arch stands today. For many years, executions were public and could attract crowds as large as 100,000. They were so popular that traders in food and drink set up their stalls to cash in on the crowds. The site now is occupied by a pub called the Tyburn.
