History

The name Fulham derives from the word “Fulanhamme,” meaning firstly “the place” and secondly “of dirt.” This is because it is close to the Thames and when it flooded, Fulham got hit hard. Especially because the Thames was part sewer back then.

Historically, Fulham Palace was home for the Bishops of London. The building was lived in for 5000 years but it is now run and maintained by the Fulham Trust. There’s plenty to do here; a museum that maps the history of the building, a Café and Botanical Gardens. 

However, the arrival of the railway transformed Fulham from a largely rural area to a thriving commuter hub. Property building boomed after this and today you'll find may wide tree lined roads of Victorian and Edwardian architecture.

Things To Do

A popular walk here is the Putney to Richmond path, which follows the route of the famous Oxford V Cambridge boat race. There are some great views of along the way. And if you’re a keen runner then an early morning run here is a great thing to do. Of course, there's the added bonus of plenty of lovely riverside pubs for a quick drink on the way.

Fulham Road runs parallel to the King’s Road and is a shopping haven for the shoppers visiting the area. It Runs from South Kensington tube stop down to the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.
