Plans are well advanced to transform Britain’s busiest shopping street into a pedestrianised Oxford Street boulevard where no taxis or buses will be allowed.
This move is expected to significantly reduce pollution, enhance safety, and open up numerous intriguing possibilities. For example, there will be more space for pavement cafes and outdoor restaurants. More trees can be planted, soaking up more carbon dioxide and offering shade on summer days.
We can even envision the new Oxford Street as a pedestrian boulevard, similar to other notable ones on the continent, such as Las Ramblas in Barcelona or Copenhagen’s Strøget.
